World War II, as is known, affected the entire world from the late 1930s to the mid 1940s. However much of the history of this war has in the past tended to be focused on the role of the Western powers, particularly the USA, UK, France, and Germany. The recent major commemoration of the war being hosted by the Russian government in Moscow was a clear recognition of the critical role played by Russia in the allied war effort.

In this regard, the Russian embassy in Pretoria will be making a presentation on the Russian front during World War II in which mention will also be made of the participation by South Africa in the Arctic Sea convoys. Some documents about the support by the South African people to the Russian effort will also be supplied.

President Putin, in his congratulatory message to African Leaders on the occasion of African Freedom Day, said:

“My country welcomes efforts of the African states to form fundamentals of collective security at regional level, including the formation of their own peace keeping potential. We attach great importance to the deepening integration process, including further rallying under the auspices of the African Union, to the continuation of preserving work on the implementation purposes and principles of NEPAD”

Speakers:

  • Andrey Sharashkin: Counsellor to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of South Africa.

  • Col Andrey Myzdrikov: Defence Attaché to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of South Africa.

This will be followed by an open discussion. The speakers will also be willing to discuss Russia’s view on global security
