ÂÂ
Private actors are playing an increasing role in African conflicts through the provision of logistic support to peacekeeping missions, largely by Western companies. Some argue that peacekeeping itself should be contracted out to corporations and not done by governments, given the withdrawal of Western countries from direct participation in UN peace operations within the continent.
ÂÂ
The operation in Sierra Leone was dependent upon private contractors, as is also the case with the AU mission in Sudan (Darfur). These factors, among others, underscore the extent of current collaboration between Africa and international private sector organisations to gain critical synergies for the management of conflicts.
ÂÂ
On the other hand, however, South Africa has a particularly complex history in this regard, as evidenced by the involvement of mercenaries in a number of African countries and the response by the Government through the Foreign Military Assistance Act.
ÂÂ
ÂÂ
The seminar will exchange ideas and information on the potentially constructive role for the private sector and its involvement in the management of African conflicts and post-conflict development.
