ISS Seminar: Zimbabwe Settlement

ISS Seminar: Zimbabwe Settlement
Pretoria, 22 September 2008

Presented by the African Security Analysis Programme

On Monday, 15 September 2008, the protagonists in Zimbabwe’s protracted negotiations signed a historic power-sharing agreement that marked an end to the political quagmire that has embroiled the country for almost a decade.  The key component of this deal, brokered by South African President Thabo Mbeki, is a government of national unity with shared executive powers between President Mugabe and Prime Minister-designate, Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the main opposition faction of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

The aim of this seminar is to analyze this deal and its prospects for survival in the two-year interim period. Comparisons will be drawn with Kenya’s post-election dispensation. Of import will not only be the actual arrangements emanating from this negotiation process, but also the processes of mediation that preceded them. Lastly, the seminar will project what the future holds for Zimbabwe.
