ISS Seminar: The Pan-African Parliament`s Role in Promoting Democracy, Good Governance and Accountability
Pretoria, 25 August 2008
ÂÂ
Presented by the African Security Analysis Programme
ÂÂ
The stated vision for establishing the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) remains that of providing a common platform for African peoples and grassroots organisations to be involved in discussions and decision-making regarding issues facing the continent. Further to this, includes the objectives and mandate of the institution as stipulated in the Protocol Establishing the Pan-African Parliament (2001). The objectives include, inter alia, the promotion of peace and security, human rights, democracy, good governance and accountability. However, the key question arising from this is, has the PAP realised the stated vision and objectives?
ÂÂ
The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) wishes to invite you to participate in a seminar reflecting on the PAP’s Role in Promoting Democracy, Good Governance and Accountability. The aim of the seminar is to reflect on the role PAP has played hitherto towards the promotion of principles of democracy, good governance, and accountability. This is critical, in view of the cases on the continent where principles of democratic elections and accountability were not upheld.
ÂÂ
It is hoped that your participation and contribution to important activities such as election observation and others on behalf of the PAP will shed important insight and advance the debate on the critical contribution this institution is making towards a realisation of its stated mission.
