ISS Seminar: Social Audits and Service Delivery. What Lessons for Civil Society in South Africa?

ISS Seminar: Social Audits and Service Delivery. What Lessons for Civil Society in South Africa?
Cape Town, 20 November 2008

Hosted by the Corruption and Governance Programme, ISS Cape Town

Social Audits have become a powerful tool for civil society organisations in developing countries to activate for access to information and accountable governance. What are the lessons for South African civil society from countries such as India and Kenya where social audits have been pioneered? Are they an effective tool to promote democratic governance? Are they relevant to efforts to improve service delivery and universal access to public service in South Africa?

Over the past two weeks the International Budget Project (IBP) office in Cape Town has brought together civil society organizations from around the world to participate in a training workshop on social audits. This lunchtime seminar will bring together representatives from the International Budget Project (IBP), MKSS (the pioneer of social audits in India) and Muhuri who are monitoring constituency development funds through social audit methodology in Kenya. They will share their experiences in discussion with Cape Town based civil society organisations.

Discussants:

  • Sowmya Kidambi, MKSS/IBP (India)

  • Yussuf Luli, Muhuri (Kenya)
