ISS Seminar: Protecting Civilians in African Conflicts: The Case of Darfur

ISS Seminar: Protecting Civilians in African Conflicts: The Case of Darfur
Pretoria, 22 May 2007

Presenters: Dr Kindiki, Dr Kangwanja and Mr Brickhill

This seminar will feature presentations of reports with comprehensive and workable sets of doctrinal principles for protecting civilians in Africa. The project, funded by the Finnish Embassy in South Africa, was informed by recognition of the fact that civilians have become the principal victims of conflicts. Among others, the project aimed at articulating, publishing and publicising a set of coherent doctrinal statements on the application of measures, including enforcement action, to protect civilians in peace operations, in the Darfur region of Sudan. These reports therefore inform and contribute to the development of principles that will shape the role of the key stakeholders in the protection civilians in Africa.
