ISS Seminar, Pretoria: Whither Zimbabwe? Questioning Progress Made after Two Years of Power-Sharing

Two years after the signing of the historic Global Political Agreement between ZANU-PF, the MDC-T and MDC-M on 15 September 2008, it is once again time to take stock of how far the country has come after the principals committed to sharing power. Observations from analysts as well as media reports appear to point to a lack of progress on the political arena, particularly with regard to the appointment of certain government officials, whilst on the other hand, many point to progress made towards economic recovery. However, has the economy really recovered, and if so, is that recovery sustainable?

To discuss the challenges faced in this regard and also to consider the progress made in the constitution-making process and linked to that the prospects for elections in 2011, the African Conflict Prevention Programme of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) has invited two well-renowned Zimbabweans to share with us their insights. To introduce this session, the ISS is proud to welcome former Swedish Ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Sten Rylander, who will provide a keynote speech, followed by presentations from Deprose Muchena from the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) and John Robertson, Harare-based economist.

  • Deprose Muchena, Economic Justice Programme Manager, OSISA
