ISS Seminar, Pretoria: The State of the South African Police Service

In recent years, officers of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have appeared in the media far too often for the wrong reasons. On almost a daily basis, South Africans are subject to reports of police corruption, criminal conduct, brutality and incompetence. Of deep concern is the problematic conduct of some of the highest ranking officers of the organisation. This not only causes a steady erosion of public trust in the SAPS, but is also increasingly destructive to the morale of the many honest and dedicated police men and women who are expected to place their lives on the line in the public interest. This seminar will explore the various factors that contribute to the key challenges facing the SAPS at this time in our democracy and offer recommendations that would enhance professionalism in the SAPS so that it can earn greater respect amongst all South Africans.

Presenters:

  • Dr Johan Burger, Senior Researcher, Crime and Justice Programme, ISS and Professor Extraordinarius, Dept of Police Practice, UNISA
  • Mr Zizamele Cebekhulu, President of the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU)
