Presented by the Peace Missions Programme (PMP) and the African Conflict Prevention Programme (ACPP), Pretoria Office.
Since 2007, the African Union (AU) has dared to defy the odds in deploying the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). In accordance with the Communiqué of the 69th Meeting of the AU PSC (19 January 2007), AMISOM is to seek to stabilise the security situation…create a safe and secure environment…for transition to the UN.
AMISOM Police seek to assist in strengthening the operational and administrative capacity, restoring the integrity of the Somali Police Force, and enabling it to perform its principal duties under the Transitional Federal Government and National Safety and Security Plan.
The situation in Somalia has generally been unstable, although in recent times TFG and AMISOM forces seem to have made some gains on the security front.
The seminar seeks to provide a platform for an in-depth discussion of the practical impact of the role and contribution of the AMISOM Police towards the overall objective of pacifying a troubled country.
