The Arms Management Programme (AMP) of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) Pretoria Office cordially invites you to a public seminar entitled “Prospects and Challenges of Disarmament and Arms Control in Southern Sudan: Implications for Upcoming Elections.â€Â
From 11 – 13 April 2010, the Republic of the Sudan will hold elections that will mark the end of the transitional government that started in 2005 with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the north and the south. The elections are due to be followed in 2011 by a referendum on whether the south should secede. The CPA calls for the Demobilization, Disarmament and Reintegration (DDR) of former combatants and special groups, and the promotion of community security and arms control, as part of the security arrangement requirements.
The seminar will discuss and analyse the prospects as well as challenges to the DDR process and civilian disarmament that the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) faces, and the modalities for improving the processes currently underway.
