ISS Seminar, Pretoria: Cote d'Ivoire: What Does The Future Hold?

Cote d’Ivoire’s post-election crisis has continued to deepen despite the flurry of diplomatic efforts intended to avert the country’s return to full-blown civil war. Consensus among various international actors on the victory of veteran opposition leader, Allasane Ouattara over incumbent, Laurent Gbagbo has so far not moved the country anywhere closer to the much needed long-term peace and stability. Economic and diplomatic pressure, alongside the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) threat to use military force to uproot Gbagbo from the Presidency have so far failed to dampen his resolve and that of his supporters to cling to power. This has left observers speculating on what the future holds for the world’s leading cocoa producer. This seminar seeks to examine the possible scenarios as well as propose policy options that could contribute to the resolution of the conflict.
