African countries are divided over the choice of a new
chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission. While SADC believes that its
candidate South African Minister of Home Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma should
be able to stand for re-election again at the next AU summit, in June this
year, there is still no widespread acceptance of South Africa’s bid to head the
continental institution. Is it because Southern Africa has a different vision
of where the AU should be going than others on the continent? Half a century
later, does pan-Africanism mean the same thing to all Africans?
The seminar will discuss among others the diverging views
about Pan-Africanism that preside over the current battle for the control of
the AU Commission
