Abuse of a Different Kind:
Adults Using Children to Commit Crime
A recent study commissioned by the Community Law Centre at the University of the
Western Cape has found that the phenomenon of children being used by adults to
commit crime is common. In total, 541 children were consulted about the problem.
The findings revealed that adults engage children directly as accomplices, and
indirectly, through buying stolen goods, showing children how to commit crime, and
providing the means to do so (such as guns). Although children were often threatened
and coerced into committing crimes, many said they engaged in crime due to the
rewards offered by adults which included drugs, money, clothes and weapons.
Speakers:
Jacqui Gallinetti, co-ordinator of the Children’s Rights Project at the
Community Law Centre, will provide an overview of the pilot project, which is
part of a broader initiative by the Department of Labour and the International
Labour Organisation to reduce children’s involvement in the worst forms of child
labour in South Africa.
Cheryl Frank, senior researcher at the ISS, will discuss the findings of the child
consultation study.
The seminar will also launch the latest issue of the ISS’s SA Crime Quarterly, in
which the results of the above research are published. Other topics in this issue are:
-
Results of the national youth victimisation study
-
