ÂÂ
South Africa has a crime problem. A common response to this has been a call to increase the resources of the criminal justice system – a call that has wide ranging support. However, there is little literature on the levels and patterns of spending on criminal justice or the policy preferences that they reflect.
ÂÂ
This seminar will launch the recent ISS paper that reports on past, present and projected spending levels. It poses the question whether South Africa spends enough on criminal justice and seeks to benchmark South African spending in relation to global norms.
ÂÂ
Speakers:
ÂÂ
Antony Altbeker: Senior Researcher at the ISS and author of the paper will provide an overview of South Africa’s spending trends on criminal justice and describe how these have changed over time and how they compare to international benchmarks.
ÂÂ
Andrew Donaldson: Deputy Director-General: Public Finance/Budget Office, National Treasury will respond to the paper and address some of the policy challenges posed when allocating resources between competing needs.
