ISS Seminar: Operationalising the AU Panel of the Wise: Progress and Prospects, Addis Ababa, 25 March 2008
ÂÂ
The Direct Conflict Prevention Programme (DCP) of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) – Addis Ababa office would like to cordially invite you to a public seminar entitled: Operationalising the AU Panel of the Wise: Progress and Prospects. The African Union Protocol Relating to the Establishment of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union has outlined a framework for implementing preventive diplomacy, peacemaking, and peacekeeping. Article 11 of the AU Protocol states that the Panel of the Wise has the mandate ‘to support the efforts of the Peace and Security Council those of the Chairperson of the Commission, particularly in the area of conflict prevention’. In addition, on ‘its own initiative, the Panel of the Wise shall undertake such action deemed appropriate to support the efforts of the Peace and Security Council and those of the Chairperson of the Commission for the prevention of conflict’. This seminar will seek to assess the progress that has been made in operationalising the Panel of the Wise, assess its key functions, and discuss its future prospects.
ÂÂ
The DCP programme strives to complement and support the work of the African union (AU) particularly on issues of peace and security. The ISS Public Seminar Series is part of the DCP’s effort to provide a platform for sharing information, encouraging policy debates and dialogues on the African peace and security agenda. DCP has invited a range of panelists to participate in this seminar, the African Union Commission, and a civil society representative.
