The Impact of HIV/Aids on Goverment Ministries in Africa: Presentation by Tim Quinlan, Research Director, HEARD

Public Sector Responses to HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa: Three Case Studies: Presentation by Robyn Pharaoh, Senior Researcher, ISS

By significantly undermining human resources in many countries in southern Africa, the HIV/AIDS epidemic stands to dramatically reduce the ability of government institutions to fulfil their mandate. The extent to which this happens will in depend heavily on whether institutions acknowledge HIV/AIDS as a problem and put in place effective responses to the epidemic.

This seminar presents the findings of two recent studies examining the impact of HIV/AIDS on government institutions in the region and their responses to the epidemic. The seminar will also launch a new book, Not business as usual: public sector responses to HIV/AIDS in southern Africa, by the AIDS and Security project. Copies of the book will be available at the seminar.

Speakers will include:

Professor Timothy Quinlan: Research director at the Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Robyn Pharoah: Senior researcher on the AIDS and Security project.
