ISS Seminar: MONUC's Perspective on Developments in the Eastern DRC
Date: 2009-02-20 to Invalid date
Hosted by the African Security Analysis Programme
The arrest of General Nkunda in January 2009 in the context of a new joint DRC-Rwanda military operation against the FDLR has opened new opportunities for peace in the eastern DRC. These new developments occurred without consulting the UN Mission in Congo (MONUC), however, and the UN was subsequently criticised for failing to execute its mandate, particularly with regard to the protection of civilians in imminent danger. Recently MONUC has put in place several operations to stabilise situations generally inflamed by various warring parties. The aim of the seminar is to present MONUC’s view of the accelerating developments in the eastern DRC and to listen to opinions from representatives of Congolese civil society.
