ISS Seminar: Global Nuclear Disarmament: The Role of Non-Nuclear Weapons States: Progress and Challenges

ISS Seminar: Global Nuclear Disarmament: The Role of Non-Nuclear Weapons States: Progress and Challenges
Pretoria, 25 March 2009

Hosted by the Arms Management Programme

The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons continues to be one of the most fundamental threats to global human and environmental security. In 2007 and 2008, former US Secretaries of State George Shultz and Henry Kissinger, former Defense Secretary Bill Perry and former Senator Sam Nunn published an op-ed linking a vision of a world free of nuclear weapons with urgent steps designed to reduce nuclear dangers. Since, then there has been growing interest, momentum and political space about the importance of working towards a world free of nuclear weapons.

The aim of this seminar is therefore to gain a greater understanding of the progress towards this aim and the role that non-nuclear weapons states can play in meeting this challenge, especially in light of the forthcoming Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference in 2010.
