Presented by the Crime and Justice Programme
How to prevent crime and improve safety are issues that have received much attention in South Africa since the launch of the National Crime Prevention Strategy in the late 1990s. Yet, it has been difficult, if not impossible to find a way to effectively ‘do’ crime prevention. Many argue that this is because the state has made the criminal justice system the focus of crime prevention initiatives, whereas crime prevention and improving safety require a more holistic approach that involves multiple stakeholders at all levels of society. Identifying the role of the criminal justice system in crime prevention is no simple task. In this seminar Julie Berg from the Centre of Criminology at the University of Cape Town will discuss what she believes are the key obstacles to effective crime prevention and propose three design principles to be followed if South Africa is to establish crime prevention as a central focus of security governance. The National Secretary of Police, Jenni Irish-Qhobosheane will speak about way in which the Secretariat and the Ministry of Police is addressing the need for crime prevention and policy approaches to safety.
Join us for this seminar on 28 July in Cape Town for a lively discussion about these issues and for a light lunch thereafter.
The seminar will launch the latest edition of SA Crime Quarterly, No. 36. Articles in this edition deal with the ‘use of force’ by the SAPS; challenges facing the SAPS as a result of a loss of public confidence in the police; the extent of anti-social psychological disorders in prison inmates; and, crime prevention. We also feature an interview with Francois Beukman, Executive Director of the Independent Complaints Directorate.
