The United Nations Office
on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recently published a report on the occurrence of
transnational organized crime in the fishing industry. The most concerning
findings of the report included:
- The severity
of abuse experienced by victims of trafficking, for the purpose of forced
labour on board fishing vessels;
- The
sophistication of transnational criminal activities that deplete the seas of
marine living resources; and
- The corruption
associated with the fishing industry as a whole.
Eve de Coning, the author
of the report, will discuss her research for UNODC and some of the issues
raised in the report that have specific relevance for Africa.
Speaker: Eve de Coning, Research Fellow, Scandinavian
Institute of Maritime Law (University of Oslo)
Chair: Charles Goredema, Programme Head, Organised Crime
and Money Laundering (Institute for Security Studies)
