ISS Seminar: Bound to Succeed? The Ambiguities of the Zimbabwean Unity Government

ISS Seminar: Bound to Succeed? The Ambiguities of the Zimbabwean Unity Government
Pretoria, 19 February 2009

The swearing in of Morgan Tsvangirai (Movement for Democratic Change – MDC) as new Prime Minister of a unity government opens up both new opportunities and risks for Zimbabwe. Whereas SADC rejoices, the international community is rather sceptical about the sustainability of the power-sharing agreement. Besides the triple political, economic and social crisis that it will have to address, the new government will first be tested by its ability to tackle the humanitarian crisis in the country. The arrest of the newly appointed deputy agriculture minister, Roy Bennett (MDC), and the silence of the security forces about their loyalty to the new Prime Minister are a clear indicator of deep-seated mistrust between coalition partners who are bound to learn to work together.

The aim of the seminar is to shed some light into the new political dispensation and the opportunities it presents for Zimbabwe and the region as a whole
