ISS Seminar: Arms Control and Disarmament: Contemporary African Issues

ISS Seminar: Arms Control and Disarmament: Contemporary African Issues
Nairobi, 29 May 2007

By Invitation Only

The ISS is a regional research institute operating across sub-Saharan Africa with offices at Pretoria and Capetown in South Africa as well as Addis Ababa and Nairobi. As a leading African human security research institution, the Institute is guided by a broad approach to security reflective of the changing nature and origin of threats to human development. This approach is reflected by the term human security.

The ability (and capacity) to engage the international debate on human security issues from the region is an important component of our work and we therefore seek to inform the debate with an African perspective.

In pursuit of ISS long-term goal which is to establish an African strategic studies institute able to compete and engage with the best internationally on those issues pertinent to continental security issues, the Nairobi Office has organized a half day Seminar (May 29, 2007) whose focus will mainly be on small arms and light weapons (SALW) and weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

The purpose of the seminar is to raise awareness and engage participants in debate about arms control and disarmament as well as duel use of sciences for peaceful and hostile purposes.

Participants in the seminar are multidisciplinary including security and government agencies, academia, civil society and the media. Participation is by invitation.
