The International Crime in Africa Programme at the ISS invites you to consider, from the prosecutor`s perspective, what it takes to put powerful leaders who have committed grave international crimes, on trial.

Panelists:
-
Barry Stevens, director of `Prosecutor`, a recently released documentary on ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo
-
Shamila Batohi, head of the Legal Advisory Section in the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICC, and former director of public prosecutions in KwaZulu Natal
-
Anton du Plessis, head of the International Crime in Africa Programme at the ISS will chair the seminar
The seminar will begin with a screening and discussion of the documentary `Prosecutor`, a fascinating story with extraordinary inside access to prosecutor Luis Moreno- Ocampo during the International Criminal Court`s (ICC) first trials. A leading South African prosecutor currently on secondment at the ICC will then provide her perspectives on the challenges of dealing with complex, high profile cases.
Ocampo`s term ends in December and the search for the next ICC prosecutor is well underway. The top job involves working in many countries, several of which are embroiled in ongoing conflict. The ICC`s lack of a police force makes the prosecutor`s office reliant on states` cooperation for conducting investigations and making arrests. The prosecutor also works in a politicised environment and must ensure not only that justice is done but also that it is seen to be done.
This event is made possible through the support of the High Commission of Canada
