ISS Seminar and Book Launch: Strategic Perspectives on Crime and Policing in South Africa

ISS Seminar and Book Launch: Strategic Perspectives on Crime and Policing in South Africa
Pretoria, 21 February 2007

“Certainly, we cannot erase that which is ugly and repulsive and claim the happiness that comes with freedom if communities live in fear, closeted behind walls and barbed wire, ever anxious in their houses, on the streets and on our roads, unable to enjoy our public spaces.”

These were the words of President Thabo Mbeki in his 2007 ’state of the nation’ address. The president uttered the words at a time when many South Africans are deeply concerned about crime and violence, and are seeking ways to fight it more effectively. The seriousness of the crime problem and the fear it instils was witnessed in the weeks preceding the president’s address. Key questions however remain about how exactly to improve safety and prevent crime.

Dr. Johan Burger has just published a book entitled ‘Strategic perspectives on crime and policing in South Africa’. The book challenges current approaches to the problem and endeavours to prove the need for an overarching (strategic) approach to the fight against crime. It goes beyond the current paradigm that the police and policing (alone) is the solution to our crime problem and makes a number of drastic recommendations in this regard.

Speaker: Dr Johan Burger: Johan is a senior researcher in the crime and justice programme at the ISS and a former Assistant Commissioner in the South African Police Service. He is also a part-time lecturer in policing at the Tshwane University of Technology’s  Department of Safety and Security Management.

Respondent: Eric Pelser: Eric is the Executive Director of the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention in Cape Town and holds a masters degree in public and development management. He has worked in the field of safety and security since 1996 and has published on policing, criminal justice issues and crime prevention.

The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session, and a light lunch. Van Schaik Publishers will also be present for promotional purposes and will have copies of the book on sale (or will take orders).
