As part of the International Crime in Africa Programme’s work to constructively shape the International Criminal Court (ICC) from the African perspective, and to build awareness and capacity at the sub-regional level among Africa states parties to the Rome Statute, a closed roundtable discussion will be held to help prepare for the 9th session of the ICC Assembly of States Parties in New York from 6-10 December 2010.
Senior officials from the justice and foreign affairs departments of Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia have been invited. The aim of the meeting is to discuss common challenges and positions relating to the ICC, with a focus on preparations for the 9th ASP.
The agenda (linked below) covers the following issues: outcomes of the ICC review conference; Article 16 of the Rome Statute: the AU’s proposed amendment and other options for the use of Article 16; cooperation with the ICC vs AU obligations; and the proposed ICC liaison office to the AU in Addis Ababa.
This is the second roundtable on the ICC held with southern African officials. The first, on 14 May 2010, was aimed at helping states to prepare for the ICC review conference.
This meeting is funded by the Open
Society Foundation for South Africa, as well as the Governments of the
Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
