ISS Round-Table: Overview of ANC Post-Polokwane Politics
Pretoria, 28 August 2008

Closed Event - By Invitation Only

Hosted by the Crime, Justice and Politics Programme

Speaker: Ms Dren Nupen

Respondent: Mr Prince Mashele, Head of the Crime Justice and Politics Programme at the ISS

There is considerable media speculation evident on the emerging dynamics within the African National Congress (ANC) as the country heads towards elections in 2009 with various factions apparently bidding for power and influence against others. Generally there appears to be little inside information on actual developments as opposed to the rich amount of analysis and speculation available on radio and in newspapers.

The purpose of this closed, round-table event for selected ISS guests is to shed some light on the emerging dynamics from the point of view of someone who is personally involved in these developments and can comment from an insider’s perspective. The session is by invitation only and will be chaired by Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Executive Director of the ISS. Mr Prince Mashele, Head of the Crime, Justice and Politics programme will respond.

Ms Dren Nupen is the former Executive Director of the Electoral Institute of Southern Africa (AISA). Amongst others she served as a member of the Electoral Task Team set up by the SA Cabinet to review the electoral system for South Africa in 2002, was Regional Director for the Open Society Institute for Africa until 2003 and a member of the Good Corporate Governance panel for the SADC Parliamentary Forum. She has been responsible for conducting the ANC internal party elections since the Durban Conference in 1991. Most recently in conducting the elections at the ANC congress in Polokwane at the end of 2007. Ms Nupen is currently conducting, as part of the Elections Agency, the ANC provincial elections, as well as the ANC Women’s League and Youth Leagues provincial elections. She will be speaking in her personal capacity and off the record.
