We take great pleasure in inviting you to a national conference on Ethics in Public Life, convened and hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) Corruption & Governance Programme in collaboration with the Public Service Commission (PSC).
The conference will bring together, for the first time, a broad spectrum of stakeholders including government officials, parliamentarians and executive members, researchers, ethics practitioners, civil society, academics and the media. The conference objective is to provide a national platform for engagement among a wide range of experts on different aspects of public ethics, with a particular focus on conflicts of interest and corruption.
As media and public attention increasingly focuses on these issues it is vital that civil society, and its partners contribute sound policy-based research and debate that serve to promote and strengthen the regulatory environment. It is hoped that the event will facilitate the necessary dialogue and stimulus for further research and trigger reform initiatives among stakeholders at this critical juncture in South Africa’s democracy.
The conference will explore the following issues:
- Restoring integrity in public life
- The effectiveness of conflicts of interest regulations (including financial disclosure laws and codes of conduct) for elected and public sector officials
- Conflicts of interest areas in public life (such as public procurement and tendering, the revolving door and party funding)
- Civil society and media perspectives
- Institutional reform and policy recommendations
