ISS Briefing: The Role of UN Peacekeepers in Re-Arming Rebel Groups in the DRC
Cape Town, 18 August 2008

Presented by the Organised Crime and Money Laundering Programme, ISS Cape Town

The briefing will consist of a viewing of the BBC Panorama documentary covering the role of UN peacekeepers in re-arming notorious rebel groups in the DRC, followed by a Question and Answer session with Martin Plaut, the BBC Africa Editor.

After an eighteen month investigation the BBC obtained confidential documents showing that UN peacekeepers in Congo have re-armed some of the most notorious rebel groups operating in the country. UN troops from Pakistan and India have exploited their positions to trade in gold with the militia and providing them with weapons and ammunition. Traveling to the Congo and to the UN in New York, the BBC`s Africa editor, Mr Martin Plaut tracked down the evidence.
