ISS Briefing: Climate Change Crisis: Is Carbon Trading Part of the Solution?

ISS Briefing: Climate Change Crisis: Is Carbon Trading Part of the Solution?
Cape Town, 15 June 2007

Presented by the ISS Corruption and Governance Programme

Detrimental climate change is finally on the global agenda. Ways to address this critical issue are highly contested. As a compromise, the United Nations Framework on Climate Change endorsed a market-based approach -carbon trading - in 2005. This was hailed as an important first step in the right direction. Carbon trading is now widely in use and the much lauded flexible trading-based approach allows both countries and companies to buy and sell pollution ‘credits’ on the open market. They can also offset their carbon emissions by investing in environmentally-friendly sustainable development projects in the developing world. However, the system is not without some serious detractors who say it is only delaying real change and corrupting the climate debate.

This panel discussion brings together key perspectives shaping the policy debate.  It is hoped that this will contribute to a climate consciousness that incorporates social justice concerns in Africa.
