INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR MINE AWARENESS AND ASSISTANCE IN MINE ACTION
4 April 2006
The Ceasefire Campaign, the Institute for Security Studies and the United Nations Information Centre invite you to the commemoration of the first International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action
Lying in fields, alongside roads and footpaths of one-third of the countries in the developing world, millions of uncleared landmines are a weapon of mass destruction in slow motion. In December 1997, 121 nations in Ottawa, Canada signed the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production, and Transfer of Anti-personnel Mines and on their Destruction.
Almost ten years later there is confidence that the battle against landmines is being won, with some other countries already achieving mine free status. However, according to the Landmine Monitor 2005, 84 countries are still affected by landmines and unexploded ordnances. The 4th of April will mark the first global commemoration of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action as declared by the United Nations General Assembly.
Speaking about current challenges facing mine affected countries will be representatives from the United Nations, the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Institute for Security Studies and the Ceasefire Campaign as well as communities affected by unexploded ordnances. A video on the issue will be shown and information materials disseminated as well.
