Challenges facing the new AU Commission

Can the new leadership, together with the Peace and Security Council, respond to current challenges?

The African Union Commission (AUC)’s new chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, along with his new deputy chairperson and eight commissioners are steering the AUC through unchartered waters.

One challenge they face is how to implement the proposed changes to the AUC structure in line with recommendations from Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s panel of experts. Another is how to respond to a rapidly changing security environment with tensions and conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Mali, Nigeria, Darfur and South Sudan. The AUC must also grapple with US President Donald Trump’s threats to reduce the US commitment to peacekeeping operations.

This seminar will assess how the AUC and the Peace and Security Council could respond to these new challenges.
