ISS Executive Director on sabbatical during 2013

The Executive Director of the ISS, Jakkie Cilliers, will be on sabbatical from the end of February until 1 October this year. He is taking up a J William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship in the USA and will be working on the forecasting of state fragility. From 1 March Jakkie will be at the Frederick S Pardee Center for International Futures at the University of Denver`s Joseph Korbel School of International Studies. From 1 June he will be in New York affiliated to the Center on International Conflict Prevention at Columbia University. The remaining months of the sabbatical will be spent reading and writing, either in South Africa or in Sweden. During the sabbatical, Jakkie will generally be working on the International Futures system that allows for integrated, long-term analysis within and across multiple dimensions of global, continental and country-specific change as part of the ISS African Futures project (see https://www.issafrica.org/futures).

During Jakkie`s absence, ISS Deputy Executive Director Anton du Plessis will serve as acting Executive Director. Anton and Jakkie have been working closely for many years, most recently in Anton`s capacity as head of the Transnational Threats and International Crime Division (a position he continues to occupy), and since the beginning of the year as Deputy Executive Director.
