30 November: ISS Seminar, Pretoria: The fall of Goma - what is next for the DRC?
The
M23 rebellion started in April 2012, and the rebels soon formed a de facto
government challenging President Joseph Kabila’s authority in Kinshasa. On
Tuesday 20 November, the provincial capital of Goma in the eastern Democratic
Republic of Congo (DRC) fell into the hands of the M23 rebels. The taking of
Goma is the M23’s biggest victory to date, and a big blow to the authorities in
Kinshasa. Moreover, it raises questions about the presence of MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping
force, in the region. The seminar aims at unpacking the dynamics of the
conflict in the eastern DRC.
