Controversies and Fear of Election-Related Violence Ahead of the Presidential poll in Senegal

Issaka K. Souaré, Senior Researcher/Acting Project Manager, Conflict Prevention and Risk Analysis, ISS Pretoria

The validation by Senegal’s Constitutional Court of president Abdoulaye Wade’s candidature for this month’s presidential elections has led to a wave of violence from opposition supporters - a preoccupying situation in the run-up to the poll. While the law is on the side of Wade, one would’ve wished that he renounces his candidature given his age and the spirit of the 2001 constitutional amendment designed to limit the presidential mandate to two terms.

Abdelkader Abderrahmane, North Africa Senior Researcher, Conflict Prevention and Risk Analysis Division, ISS Addis Ababa

Since the creation of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) in 1989, this North African regional organisational has been little more than an empty shell. ISS Paper 230: Confronting Complex Political Crises in West Africa, An Analysis of ECOWAS Responses to Niger and Cote d`Ivoire, David Zounmenou and Sylvie Loua

This paper aims to explain how the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has attempted to address the crises in Niger and Côte d’Ivoire. It argues that, for once, in spite of its structural and political deficiencies, ECOWAS more or less remained within its normative and institutional framework in its attempts to resolve the two crises.

ISS Seminar Report, Pretoria: The African Union Summit – a Retrospective

From the start of this seminar participants and presenters, as well as all those who attended the 18th Summit of Heads of State of the African Union (AU) noted how it took place in a different context, particularly as the antics of former Heads of State such as the late Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi would no longer dominate proceedings and media reports. This enabled the conference to proceed in a more professional and business-like manner.

ISS Seminar Report, Pretoria: The Threat of Boko Haram and the Challenges to Peace, Security and Unity of Nigeria

Since gaining independence in 1960, military coups, ethnic and religious tensions have characterised post-independence Nigeria. The end of the civil war (1967-1970) was believed to be an opportunity to unite Nigerians. Yet, in the post-civil war era, Nigeria has been confronted by daunting security challenges including recurrent communal violence that has pitted various communities against one another in the country. After many years of military rule, the reintroduction of multiparty democratic rule in 1999 has coincided or seems to have led to an intensification of ethnic and religious militancy, characterised by acts of terrorism, civil strife and protests.

The ACPP Daily Briefings

The briefings are held weekday mornings in the ACPP Pretoria`s Situation Room and the Briefing Notes are the minutes of this meeting during which each regional expert of the Programme reports on the latest human security developments in his/her region, followed by general discussions around the table. An intern then compiles a summary of the meeting, which is reviewed by the respective researchers, and a senior researcher edits the report and provides quality control before returning it to the intern to prepare it for dispatch to the mailing list to which you have subscribed.
