05 Nov 2007: ISS Seminar, Accra: Domestic Terrorism in Africa, 5-6 November 2007

Register Online: ISS Seminar: Domestic Terrorism in Africa
Accra, 5-6 November 2007

Although the international community has mainly focused on the threat and consequences of trans-national terrorism, domestic terrorism poses an equally serious threat to human security in Africa. It is therefore essential to address this phenomenon in order to gain a deeper and comprehensive understanding of terrorism on the continent and efforts to combat and prevent it. Experiences from around the continent have shown that domestic terrorism has devastating economic, social and political consequences in Africa. Besides creating humanitarian crises, it has undermined the general livelihoods of the communities and retarded development. The seminar thus seeks to bring together experts and scholars from all the regions of Africa and beyond in order to assess how various countries have dealt with threats and incidents of domestic terrorism. The seminar is also expected to create an understanding of the social, economic and political consequences of domestic terrorism in Africa on development. The possibility of any linkages between domestic and transnational terrorism will also be discussed.
