04 Oct 2007: ISS Seminar, Pretoria: Work of the International Criminal Court in Africa: Successes, Challenges and Limitations

Register Online: ISS Seminar: Work of the International Criminal Court in Africa: Successes, Challenges and Limitations
Pretoria, 4 October 2007

One of the key challenges that face long-term post-conflict peace building is the strengthening of the rule of law. The international community has, in recognition of the need for accountability, set up mechanisms that seek to provide justice where serious crimes have been committed.   One such a mechanism is the International Criminal Court (ICC) which has jurisdiction over international crimes.   The ICC has focused a significant amount of its work on the African continent with, among others, its work on the ‘situations’ in the DRC, Uganda, Sudan, etc.

It is with this in mind that the Institute for Security Studies will be hosting a seminar that will look at the successes, challenges and limitations that the ICC faces on the African continent.   You are invited to this seminar for a lively discussion of these key issues.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Alhaji Marong. Dr. Marong is a senior legal officer, Appeals Chamber, Special Court for Sierra-Leone.  He will be speaking on “The Work of the ICC in Africa: A Practitioner`s Perspective”.
  • Professor Max du Plessis. Prof. du Plessis is a lecturer in the law faculty of the University of Kwazulu-Natal and a senior research associate at the ISS.  The title of his presentation is “The International Criminal Court, Complementarity and the African Union”.
