View on Africa: Somaliland prepares for new leadership

The contest is close as parties vie for the country’s top position.

The stakes are high in Somaliland’s 13 November elections as President Silanyo prepares to step down. The elections are critical for a number of reasons, including the two-year delay in holding the polls and close contestation by the two biggest political parties. Regardless of the outcome, the polls will result in fresh leadership.

This View on Africa briefing is presented by Omar S Mahmood, ISS researcher in Addis Ababa. He will discuss the upcoming elections and why they are so important for Somaliland’s future.
