Wildlife crime is the fourth most lucrative form of organised crime globally. It is also one of the most expensive security challenges facing southern Africa.

The vast majority of available data on wildlife crime focuses on poaching and smuggling. As a result, emphasis is placed on securing national parks and patrolling border points. But more attention is needed on curbing demand and understanding how organised crime networks operate.

This View on Africa briefing is presented by Ciara Aucoin, Researcher with the ENACT project on transnational organised crime in Africa. She will discuss results of a new pilot study on organised wildlife crime in southern Africa.

This briefing is part of series of regional events run by ENACT leading up to World Rhino Day on 22 September.
