Why have 12 governments making up the Great Lakes region failed to resolve Burundi’s ongoing conflict?
The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) was created to tackle conflict and promote development in the region. But the intergovernmental organisation’s track record is poor. Worst of all, ICGLR is headquartered in Burundi – the site of an intractable political conflict.
In this week’s View on Africa, Dr Nelson Alusala, a Senior Research Associate at the ISS, will discuss ICGLR’s mediation and how this compares with the parallel processes led by the African Union and the East African Community. Lessons that could shape similar interventions in future will be considered.
