View on Africa: government crisis persists in Guinea-Bissau

After more than a year without a functioning government, why are political actors unable to reach consensus?

Despite the 2016 Conakry Agreement and recent mediation efforts by the Economic Community for West African States, Guinea-Bissau’s political crisis remains deadlocked. State institutions have been paralysed since August 2015 when former prime minister Domingos Simões Pereira’s government was dismissed by President José Mário Vaz. Political infighting has left the current government without a budget for over a year.

This View on Africa is presented by Paulin Maurice Toupane, Researcher at the ISS Dakar office. He will discuss the causes of the crisis and the efforts to resolve it.
