People in South Africa are much more likely to be murdered or become victims of armed robbery than five years ago.

The problem isn’t a lack of police or a scarcity of skilled officers. It’s incompetence and dishonesty at the highest levels of the South Africa Police Service that have crippled the country’s crime-fighting institutions. As a result, levels of corruption and violent and organised crime are soaring.

This View on Africa briefing is presented by Gareth Newham, Head of the Justice and Violence Prevention Programme, ISS Pretoria. He will discuss a recently-launched ISS and Corruption Watch campaign to raise public awareness and pressure for appropriate appointments of police leaders.
