View on Africa: crisis of cohesion in Zimbabwe’s opposition

This briefing analyses the battle for control of Zimbabwe’s MDC party ahead of elections.

Since its formation in 1999, Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has fractured twice. The party is again splintering, and elections are only four months away. Following MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s death in February, the party’s former deputy president Thokozani Khupe broke away. Both she and Nelson Chamisa are now claiming to be the acting presidents of the MDC.

This View on Africa is presented by Derek Matyszak, a senior research consultant at ISS. He will analyse the damaging battle for control of the MDC and implications for the impending polls.
