View on Africa: Burundi’s presidential U-turn

A new president will be elected following Nkurunziza’s surprise decision to step down in 2020.

On 7 June, Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he will not stand for re-election in 2020. His decision comes just days after a referendum ushered in a new constitution that extended presidential terms from five to seven years. What led to Nkurunziza’s turnaround and what does this mean for Burundi?

This View on Africa is presented by Stephanie Wolters, head of the ISS Peace and Security Research programme. She will discuss possible reasons for Nkurunziza’s decision and how this will affect Burundi’s future.
